Bird Pic Of The Week

Black-necked Stilt or Ae'o

(Himantopus mexicanus)

Where: Kahuku on Oahu, HI • Aqua Farms near James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge

Notes: This fourteen inch tall bird was one of the first endemic (native) species found on a recent trip to Oahu, Hawaii. There is always an excitement that comes with the opportunity to see and photograph a new species of bird. Having done my homework, the aqua farm area on Oahu's north-east side looked like a good location from the satellite maps. Other written accounts pointed that way as well. As I approached each new rectangular pond, I'd slowly peek over the surrounding vegetation with hopes of avian discovery. Then after about four or five ponds, I herd the familiar sound of yappy sandpiper calls coming from the bottom of a drained pond. I had heard that call before on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. From the far corner I could see two dozen or more Stilts! My partner and I crept on our elbows to a good vantage point. We sat for a long time observing the flock as individuals flew in and out of the group. We crept closer along the grass, then captured our fill of photos. This Stilt is federally listed as an Endangered Species. In the 1940's populations were as low as only 200 birds due to habitat loss and hunting. The current population is about 1,500, but is still a species of concern. We found these beautiful creatures at a few other locations as we explored the island paradise over the next couple of weeks. Second only to the Flamingo, Stilts have the second longest legs to body ratio of any bird. The black on the island subspecies neck, generally wraps farther to the front that the continental species (left).
