Bird Pic Of The Week

Rose-breasted Grosbeak

(Latin)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: Sounds of the oncoming spring migration continue to flow from the pair of magnificent Oaks in my backyard. Earlier, down the street, we had heard this species singing on a morning stroll, but never caught a glimpse of its crimson red belly. The clear, loud slurs of its song are like an American Robin that has had singing lessons. The gentle dripping at my birdbath, continues to attract birds more beautiful that ever expected; hopeful, but not expected. Then, the following day after this gorgeous, spring-plumage male Grosbeak appeared, we were treated with a visit from the female (left) as well. She is not as spectacular as the male, but is distinctive in her own way. These seven inch long birds are on their northward spring migration. Starting from Central America, they head northward to the upper half of the United States and into southern Canada. What a thrill to have these birds in our presence, even if only for a day or two. How can I look at a creature like this and deny there is not a greater force at work in the universe? I can't!

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
