Bird Pic Of The Week

American Robin

(Turdus migratorius)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: As winter passes, there are increased sightings of these large thrushes on the rising green lawns. This bird's "arrival" is often associated with the coming of spring. Yet, Robins are actually found year round in this part of the country. If they migrate at all, it is only for short distances. In the winter months they travel in flocks, after very large, in search of Holly Berries and other fruit bearing sources. So if you see a Robin in the winter, you are most likely to see a lot of them, maybe hundreds or even thousands. The reason we see them more in the spring is that they have broken out from their nomadic winter flocks and have begun to pair off in anticipation of the coming breeding season. The American Robin is the state bird of three states: Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
