Bird Pic Of The Week

Black and White Warbler

(Mniotilta varia)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: The peak of spring migration is always an exciting time of year. I never know what is going to show up in the backyard. What makes it even more enjoyable is that I don't have to burn a bunch of gasoline (or time) to get to where the birds are; they are coming here or at least passing through here. So far this spring there has been a Wood Thrush, Northern Parulas, Black-throated Greens, Prairie, Yellows, Black-throated Blues, Blackpolls, plenty of Yellow-rumped Warblers and this striking Black and White. This is the time of year when hours spent watching and listening really pay off! My wife and I have enjoyed our time sitting with a cup of coffee in the small blind we occasionally set up in the backyard. It has stoked our love for birds and each other. The anticipation of a new arrival peaks, when we spot some little bird, hopping around the bushes and branches.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
