Bird Pic Of The Week

Blue Jay

(Cyanocitta cristata)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This is a common bird in eastern and central North America. They mainly feed on nuts and seeds. They love peanuts, especially when still in the shell. This striking beauty is predominately blue with a white breast and underparts, and a blue crest. It has a black, U-shaped collar around its neck and a black border behind the crest. Its voice is equally distinctive. It can make a large variety of sounds and can mimic other birds too. They can even copy the cries of local hawks so well, that it is sometimes difficult to tell which is which. The Blue Jay is most commonly recognized for their loud "jay - jay" alarm call. These birds are sometimes seen harassing a hawk or owl that is perched in a tree. I have located many such raptors just by listening to and following the alarm calls of these and other birds.
