Bird Pic Of The Week

Black-crowned Nightheron (`Auku`U)

(Nycticorax nycticorax)

Where: Oahu, HI • Magic Island Beach Park

Notes: The scientific name, Nycticorax, means "night raven", and refers to this medium sized heron's nocturnal habits and quirky, crow-like call. This handsome species is Hawaii's only native resident heron. It was a bit unusual to see this heron out in the light, because most days they roost in shady bushes until daylight fades. These birds hunt by standing still at the water's edge, mainly at night, and wait to ambush prey such as small fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, small mammals and even small birds. They occasionally eat baby birds; this is a concern to biologists because their habitat dictates that they coexists in with several threatened species such as the Hawaiian Black-necked Stilt, Hawaiian Common Moorhen and Hawaiian Coot.
