Bird Pic Of The Week

Red-shouldered Hawks

(Buteo lineatus)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: Just two days before this shot was captured, I was stopped by a neighbor and informed that a hawk had just killed a squirrel in my backyard. I grabbed my camera and ran out the front door, circling the property to get into a better position and then took cover behind the bushes. The hawk was pretty focused on its catch, which allowed me to capture a lot of images from behind my neighbor's fence. Eventually the hawk left as the sun faded behind the trees. The next morning the partially eaten carcass was still laying out on the lawn. I was surprised that a raccoon or fox had not taken it overnight. So, I tossed the remains into the mulch bed in the back corner of my lot. Curiosity drove me place my remote surveillance camera on that spot, wondering if something would finish the job. With no surprise, an American Crow came in for a look. But that was very quickly interrupted, when the Red-shouldered Hawk returned and chased away the Crow. It was as if the raptor had been keeping and eye on it from a distance. Again the hawk picked away the the carcass and eventually flew up onto the brush pile with it. Early the next morning when I went out to check the birdfeeders, there was already a Red-shoulder sitting in the large oak tree in the back. Within an hour he was back on the remains and again I grabbed the camera. I was looking through the eye piece, photographing the male hawk as he tugged and bit at the remains, when suddenly a second bird filled the frame! Wings flapped everywhere and within a moment the slightly larger female (above-left) had taken over the feast. This full frame image was the only frame that had all of both birds in the picture, so I was excited about such a Blessed shot.
