Purple Gallinule
(Porphyrio martinica)
Where: Christmas, FL • Orlando Wetlands Park
Notes: This is another shot from our Florida trip back in the spring. This was a life bird for me, as it had eluded me on an earlier trip. Besides, I had just not traveled far enough south before, to get into the resident rage of this species. I was amazed at the length of its toes, which help to distribute its weight, as it walks on top of the aquatic plants that cover its marshland habitat. Its extremely long toes even allow it to walk on lily pads without sinking. This bird is a close relative of the Common Moorhen and it is in the same family as rails. It is covered in a rainbow of iridescent colors over a deep blue to purple base. This Gallinule is resident in southern Florida, but most North American birds migrate to Argentina for the winter. What a beauty! |
