Bird Pic Of The Week

Black-throated Green Warbler (juvenile)

(Setophaga virens)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This may be one of my luckiest (Blessed?) thus far. I had been attempting to capture an image of a lingering fall Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Several times over the last two days I had seen it at the birdbath. This was a new occurrence, as I had never seen a "hummer" sit at my birdbath before. I was excited at the prospect of adding it to my birdbath program; if only I could get a decent shot. After three tries, I finally succeeded with one single shot. So, next I thought I would try to get a photo from a different angle, perhaps a profile. So, I rotated the position of the camera about ninety degrees from its original position and hoped the bird would return to the same exact spot. I connected a couple of close-up tubes because the Ruby-throat is so small, then I connected the remote trigger and watched. No Hummingbird all morning; perhaps it had finally migrated? This was an all or none set-up for a chance at a photo. Then around 9:20 AM this little green bird appeared at the little pool of water. I was freaking because I was knew the camera was zoomed in too close and the depth of field (in-focus range) was very narrow. However, the bird did pace back and forth to the edge of the stone where I had expected the Hummingbird, so I snapped a few shots, just in case. When I downloaded the memory card I clicked through the shots quickly, assured there would be only blurry or partial shots. Then this image appeared on the screen! Oh my God! I could not believe it! A focused photograph with all of the bird in the frame. This is nearly a full frame shot and became the second addition to my favorite "Wet and Wild II" Birdbath Program in the same week. I am truly Blessed.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
