Bird Pic Of The Week

Red-breasted Nuthatch

(Sitta canadensis)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: It's been an exciting start to fall migration. This Red-breasted Nuthatch makes the third addition to my Birdbath Program this season. These additions do not come so often any more. It brings the total species count of bathing, splashing and drinking birds photographed to fifty-one. That number does not even count the alternative images of different gender and seasonal plumages. I started photographing birds specifically at this micro environment in 2005 at my previous home in Bedford County, Virginia. This began after I decided to Build a Natural Birdbath in my backyard patio garden. Surprised at how much it attracted birds, I devised a means to view the little puddle more often. So, I bought a cheap security camera system, then pointed it at the birdbath and viewed the feed on a small TV in my home office. This allowed all day viewing. I was amazed at the amount of activity and diversity of birds it attracted! As a budding amateur nature photographer, this motivated my interest in capturing images of these beautiful creatures. So, I explored a way to activate the camera from a distance. With the help of a tripod, two thirty-three foot cables and a remote trigger, I was able to take pictures in the backyard, while still sitting at my office desk. A relocation to Richmond in 2006 put a break in the this endeavour, until 2009, when I was able to set up a new birdbath and continue the quest. With the help of a new wireless shutter release and an outdoor rated monitoring camera, I was back to watching and capturing the action. Since then. I have recaptured images of all the original twenty-five species from Bedford, except Cedar Waxwing, plus an additional twenty-six others. There are six more species that I have seen at the small water feature, but they have eluded my lens and shutter thus far. More to come?

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. A total of EIGHTY species has been attracted at a single location in central Virginia!
