Bird Pic Of The Week

Pine Siskins

(Spinus pinus)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: I first saw one of these heavily striped little seed eaters in Maine one summer a few years ago. Their breeding range is primarily western and northern United States into southern Canada. In the winter, they extend their range southward, but not always this far south. This sighting was only the second time I have had them visit my backyard feeders here in Richmond, Virginia over the last six years. The presence of Red-breasted Nuthatches and Chipping Sparrows, plus the recent arrival of a few of our winter resident birds, such as White-throated Sparrows, are evidence that fall migration is still in motion. This species is similar to a female House Finch, but is slightly smaller with yellow wing markings. It also has more defined striping. I heard someone say just the other day, "If you have one Siskin, you'll probably have many." This is because they most often travel in small flocks as they search for food and water. I heard the first of their wheezy twitters about a week ago, but only saw one Siskin. So over the weekend, I decided to try and capture a photo and perhaps a little video too. That's when I discovered that a few more birds had joined the one. I counted as many as six at first, but while I was shooting video, a dozen flittered in and out of the frame! Several times that day, the flock appeared at the birdbath. One of the group would show up and the rest would usually follow. Their group interaction was interesting to witness as they drank and splashed in the trickling puddle.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
