Bird Pic Of The Week

Ruby-crowned Kinglet

(Regulus calendula)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This male Kinglet was another of the recent fall/winter arrivals, as the weather has finally started to turn a little bit cool. Late that afternoon, my wife and I were working on some photos in the office. The remote video camera at the birdbath was turned on and the feed was being displayed on the small TV above my desk. I also had my good camera set up on the tripod, pointed at the birdbath out back. The remote trigger was turned on, in case anything unusual stopped off at the birdbath for an end of the day drink. We heard several short bursts of Wren like chatters and within moments this very small three and a half inch bird appeared on the screen. Over the past few years, we had only seen a Kinglet at the birdbath two or three times. That in it self made it exciting, so I began to snap a few pictures remotely. Then as this tiny olive-green bird entered the water, its ruby crown opened up completely and it lit up the screen like a brilliant-red fireball! The bird hopped around, in and out of the water, then displayed it's ruby-red marking with amazing control. It was interesting to see how far apart the gap of feathers spread. Only the males have a red crown patch, which is usually concealed. We had never witnessed such an extensive display before. What a Blessing!

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
