Bird Pic Of The Week

Downy Woodpecker (female)

(Picoides pubescens)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This is an uncommon sight for a common bird. Of the many birds that frequent my backyard, not all of them are inclined to visit my ground-level puddle of a birdbath. All of the species in the woodpecker family seem reluctant to use the small water feature. Supposedly, woodpeckers get a lot more liquid through their diet and do not need to drink at baths as often as other birds. Bugs, juicy berries and suet cakes aren’t as dry as seeds and thus they need to make fewer stops at the bath. Sometimes they drink from holes in trees that have filled with rainwater as well. Hours and hours of observation has proven to me that this type bird probably gets its water intake from some other source. I have seen a Red-bellied Woodpecker and a Northern Flicker in the bath as well, but only 2 times each over the past six or seven years. These usually occur after long periods without rain. The longer it is between raindrops, the more activity there is at the birdbath.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. A total of EIGHTY species has been attracted at a single location in central Virginia!
