Bird Pic Of The Week

Osprey

(Pandion haliaetus)

Where: Newport News, VA • Loins Bridge on Museum Drive

Notes: For me, this shot will always have a "special" meaning well beyond the excitement of this bird of prey snatching a Herring from the James River. This was literally one of the last two shots that would ever be taken with my Canon 5D Mark II camera body! On that warm spring day, I had waded out up to about knee deep at the beach next to the spillway where Lake Maury overflows into the James River. This was to improve my position to the sunlight direction. Having waited most of the morning, an Osprey finally flew in and took a fish right in front of me. Happy with what I saw in the viewfinder, I decided to head home. Then, just after I released my hand from the camera's grip and turned, I heard the distinct sound of the metal attachment plate sliding off the tripod's mount. I had inadvertently loosened it prior to taking this picture. That sound was immediately followed by the stone-pounding impact of the lens and camera body hitting the water below. Yes, it was one of those slow motion events, wishing this was not really happening as it sank in the shallow water. I plucked out the immersed equipment, almost as quickly as is sank, in a motion more like a reflex than a reaction. However, I knew my speedy efforts were still too late. Certainly no match for a powered up electrical device. I knew in my gut the damage was done. No amount of prayer or profanity would dry up what had just happened. Acceptance was my only good option. It turns out, that I was only nine miles from Canon's east coast service center. So I paid them a visit. The verdict was terminal for the camera body, as I expected, but the lens is still working! Special thanks to my wife and best friend Lori, for her understanding and continuing support in my life's endeavors.
