Bird Pic Of The Week

Cooper's Hawk

(Accipiter cooperii)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: I usually know when there is a hawk hanging around the neighborhood, because the other birds tell me so. Most species have distinct warning calls: Wrens make a "shushing" noise, Cardinals a sharp loud chip, and Brown Thasher's a robust "snap". Most people have heard the excessive scalding of a Blue Jay or two squawking at some intruder. Whatever the warning sound, it usually results in a frantic scattering of almost every bird in the general vicinity. When a hawk arrives in the area, birds warn each other of the danger. An alarm sound sends them scurrying to the nearest shelter, usually a nearby tree or thick hedgerow. I wonder if a bird might "call wolf" in order to clear off a spot at a busy feeder? People often ask, "What do I do about the hawk hanging around my birdfeeders?" "Peanuts", I say, "Unsalted and still in the shell." These attract Blue Jays and there is no better natural deterrent for hawks, than a small group of Jays to chase off an unwanted hunter in the area.
