Bird Pic Of The Week

Baltimore Oriole

(Icterus galbula)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: In our backyard the presence of fall migration has always been more of an occasional sprinkling, compared to the trickle and sometimes splashes of the spring movement. So far this year, that pattern has held true. A single fall plumage Chestnut-sided Warbler a week ago, and a Summer Tanager the week before that. This seven inch female Oriole appeared without even a chirp. I just happened to look up and see her approaching the water. Fortunately I had decided to set the camera up that day and had it ready to go. The bird sat still on the edge of the rock for a couple of minutes and then took a slow approach into the puddle. This species received its name because the male's colors resemble the orange and black on the coat-of-arms of Lord Baltimore, who was the first Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland in the 1600's. I know I have seen the male numerous times in my life, but have little to no recollection of ever seeing a female before. This was a new birdbath species for my yard (number 55 photographed).

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
