Bird Pic Of The Week

Summer Tanager (female)

(Piranga rubra)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This female Summer Tanager showed up at my backyard birdbath a couple of days ago, just before the fall equinox. Another sign that the summer season is passing. There were two previous sightings of this meduim-sized American songbird in 2011 to this same small puddle, both birds were also females. Although she does not carry the brilliant red plumage of the male (WeeklyPhotos2009/06-22-09), this is still a beautiful bird. This species migrates mostly to Mexico, Central America and northern South America where they eat berries and insects, just like they do when they are in our area during our warmer months. While here for the breeding season their range covers primarily the south-east United States. It's a bit sad to know such a lovely creature is leaving, but a joy to have witnessed its presence one more time.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
