Bird Pic Of The Week

Hermit Thrush

(Catharus guttatus)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This Hermit Thrush is another wintertime visitor here in the middle North American region and southward. This specie's range covers North America from east to west, but in the breeding season it inhabits only the northern states along the Canadian border and northward. At my Virginia residence this bird is uncommon at best, as far as its presence in my suburban backyard, but I see them more commonly in areas with greater expanses of deciduous woodlands and thickets. I have seen this Thrush only three times in the last four years at the birdbath. I think my neighbor's Holly Tree that grows along our shared property line attributes to its occasional presence, since berries are one of its favorite foods. This Thrush is differentiated from the other members of this family of birds by its brownish upper-parts and rusty-red tail. What a gift it is to have this occasional visitor adding variety to my backyard fauna.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
