Hooded Merganser
(Lophodytes cucullatus)
Where: Albuquerque, NM
Notes: This male Merganser was a real treat to find hanging out amongst a mixed flock of ducks that also included Ring-necked, Ruddy, Mallard, and American Wigeon. The striking contrast and unique shape of this bird makes it a splendid subject. This drake paddled slowly back and forth preening and drinking. Occasionally it would dive under water, perhaps to feed on a small fish, crustacean or aquatic insect. I attempted to capture the character and fine detail of his crest as it tipped its beak back with a sip of water. This profile position was one of my favorite images from that special day. Overcast skies aided in decent exposure that would otherwise be difficult, if it had been a brighter day. I also like how the amber colored vegetation in the background made the reflections in the water almost the same color as the bird's rusty flank. The Hooded is North America's smallest Merganser. |
