Bird Pic Of The Week

Tundra Swan

(Cygnus columbianus)

Where: Chincoteague, VA • Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

Notes: Each winter brings us a change in scenery, especially with birds. As the lakes and ponds in the far north freeze, the waterfowl trickle southward. The Tundra Swan is no exception to this trend. With a length of around four feet long, from its beak to the tip of its tail, this swan species will need all of its five foot plus wingspan to travel the great distances down the continent from the arctic and sub-tundra where it breeds. Often seen flying in large V-shaped flocks, they make their way as far south as the mid-United States along the coasts to the grasslands and wetlands. They can fly as high as 27,000 feet during migration. Swans typically feed in shallow waters where they can reach the bottom with their long necks. Sometimes they are seen in open fields feeding on leftover grains from a recent harvest. It is always a Blessing to see these magnificent travelers on there wintering grounds, having safely made the journey of hundreds of miles.
