Bird Pic Of The Week

Limpkin

(Aramus guarauna)

Where: Polk County, FL• Circle Bar B Preserve

Notes: That afternoon it had been raining on and off a little, so I had a waterproof cover over the camera and lens. I even had a compact folding umbrella opened and hovering just over my head. I stood for quite a while in a spot along the roadside where a few Roseate Spoonbills and a couple of Limpkin were hanging around, hoping to capture some action. Braving the elements was eventually worth it, because I got to whiteness the tender courtship behavior of these two and a half foot long waders. The larger bird, most likely the male, had extracted a sizable Apple Snail from the shallows of the nearby pond and carried it to a spot along the shoreline just to my left. It dropped the snail on the ground, pounded it open with its long beak and then offered the escargot to the other Limpkin, assumably a female. After eating the snail, they wondered back into the knee deep water, side-by-side. I then repositioned myself so that if they repeated the behavior, I might have a chance to capture this caring interaction. Many species of birds offer their partner or perspective mate and offering of food, perhaps to prove that they are a good provider. I had barely gotten into position, umbrella and all, when I looked up and saw the pair once again approaching the same spot along the bank, right in from of me. They were so close I became fearful of them not fitting into the frame, but somehow they did. So this is a full frame shot. Again the snail was prepared and offered to the other bird. Florida is the northern most extension of this tropical species’ range, which extends well down the continent of South America.
