Bird Pic Of The Week

Great Egret

(Ardea alba)

Where: St. Augustine, FL • Alligator Farm and Zoological Park

Notes: This was of my many favorites from our recent trip to visit Florida during the spring rookery season. Breeding time comes early in the far south and the nesting activity was spectacular and in full swing. Some pairs were still in the midst of courtship and nest building, while others were already incubating eggs. Several pairs even had newborn chicks. At each nest one adult was always present, while the other either was off gathering nesting materials or food. Normally at such a location as this a short zoom lens is preferred, because of the close proximity to the birds. But I wanted to take a completely different approach, in hopes of capturing a unique view of this amazing feat of nature. So, I decided to try a very long lens. This immediately eliminated some of the close range subject matter, but at the same time brought into reach a different perspective at this heavily photographed location. I wanted to capture the intimacy of the parent-offspring dynamic with almost macro like closeness. I had been taking pictures at two or three other nearby nests that morning. Suddenly a squawking ruckus broke out behind me. A neighboring Wood Stork had wandered too close to this Great Egret’s nest and the Egret let the Stork know it. The Egret fanned its wings and quills, then quickly stood to fend off the Stork. This action revealed the chicks it had been covering to keep warm. With the intruder gone, the Egret carefully eased back down over the nest, its wings and quills still spread. This one little hatchling remained poking out from under its parent’s wing, as if it wanted to see what the excitement was about.
