Bird Pic Of The Week

Sandhill Crane

(Grus canadensis)

Where: Melbourne, FL • Viera Wetlands

Notes: One silent wish I had before we left on our most recent trip to Florida, was to see and perhaps photograph a Sandhill Crane chick with its parent. It was the right time of year, but the places we had planned to visit were not probable locations at all for this species. Seeing a few recent postings on the internet, had only wetted my appetite. After nearly a week in Florida, on the day before we were to start back northward, I was talking to a couple we had met while photographing at a rookery in the Orlando area. Since they were from Florida, I casually asked, without any real hope of a response, if they knew where any Sandhill Cranes were that had chicks. “Oh, yes! At Viera Wetlands,” they responded. “And they are only about 10 days old.” So the next morning we adjusted our travel plans back to St. Augustine, to include a side trip to Viera Wetlands (Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at Viera). I had been there a few times before and knew it might be a challenge to find such little critters. However back in December we had found a group of Limpkin chicks along the tall marsh grasses (SEE: Pic Of The Week: 02/14/14). Locating the chicks was easier that we had hoped. They were feeding in nearly the exact location were we had been told they were. The morning light was in our favor. The chicks followed the adults around as they dug up insects out of the soft waterside soil. Occasionally the chicks would drop down to hide in the grass and completely dissapear. Mostly they jockeyed around one another for position and to see which one could get to the newest morsel of food, excavated up by one of the parents, first. At about eleven inches tall, they were actually cuter that I had ever imagined.
