Bird Pic Of The Week

Swainson's Thrush

(Catharus ustulatus)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This medium-sized woodland Thrush is heard much more often that it is seen. So when I first heard its flute-like, upward spiraling song, the softness of its call made me think it was quite a distance away. But after listening more intently to its beautiful voice, I realized it was near. It was just singing at a very low volume. Soon it approached the birdbath from the direction of the large Holly Tree in the back corner of the garden. This was only the second appearance of this species to the yard, so I was especially excited when it made its way into the dripping puddle and splashed around for a little while. It soon departed back to the protection of the nearby thicket. As does most of the Thrush family, they forage for insects and eat berries. They breed in wooded areas north and west of the Rocky Mountains and winter in Central and South America. So they are seen (or heard) in most of North American primarily during migration, as is the case with this bird.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. A total of EIGHTY species has been attracted at a single location in central Virginia!
