Bird Pic Of The Week

Great Crested Flycatcher

(Myiarchus crinitus)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: It is not often that I have the pleasure of adding to the tally of total bird species that have visited my backyard birdbath anymore (species number 59). This was the first time ever to have any member of the Flycatcher family in the bath, since installing the first “Natural Birdbath” back in 2004 in Bedford County. Flycatchers typically wait on a high perch and fly out and back to catch insects in flight. I have heard the Great Crested’s "weeep" call for several years here in my Richmond, Virginia neighborhood, but never had it come to the bath. A couple of weeks ago, I saw this bird near the bath, but it seemed disinterested and soon flew off. So when this large seven to eight inch Flycatcher landed on the rock that morning, I could hardly believe my eyes. Since these birds primarily eat insects, fruits and berries, so they get a lot of moisture from their diet. Thus, do not need to drink much, if any, additional water. But to bathe is apparently different story. At times this bird seemed both curious and awkward in its approach to the puddle, as if it was quite unsure of what it was getting into. It would open its tail and flatten its wings against the wet rock; then finally it hopped into the water. For a moment, the Flycatcher flew up to a nearby perch and then quickly returned for a final rinse, fluttering its wings and shaking off like a wet dog. Eventually it ascended back into the high canopy of the tall White Oak back where it had come from.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. A total of EIGHTY species has been attracted at a single location in central Virginia!
