Bird Pic Of The Week

Yellow-crowned Night Heron

(Nyctanassa violacea)

Where:Norfolk, VA • Pleasure House Point

Notes: Our local Audubon Society’s spring fund-raiser took us on a trek to Virginia’s eastern shore earlier this year. The return from such trips has always brought me a bit of sadness. I accredit this melancholy mood to not wanting such a joyful time to end. Our return trip took us along the thirteen mile passage of the Chesapeak Bay Bridge Tunnel, so we decided to have lunch at the newly remodeled restaurant on the first island. It is a normal stop for us anyway, because whenever passing through, we always stop and inspect the island’s parameter for birds. While at lunch we decided, we were just not ready for our trip to end. So I pulled up my list of favorite birding spots loaded on my GPS. Pleasurehouse Point was only a few miles away. The tide chart was favorable as well. My wife had never been there before, so it seemed like a good choice. The small park is known amongst local photographer’s as the go to place for this species of Night Heron and it did not disappoint. After the short hike to the water we found thee different adult birds searching for food along the Oyster beds and marsh grasses. They were using their extremely thick bills to grab Fiddler Crabs and worms out on the mud flats. But even that fun eventually had to come to an end. We wanted to be home before it got too late. As I headed back towards our vehicle, I noticed this Heron sitting very still in the grasses, just a few feet off the walking path. I imagine it thought, I would not see it. I slowed my pace after passing the bird. Then I turned back, creeping low along the crest of the sand bank. Once parallel with the bird, I stood upright ever so slowly and aligned the focus sensor on its orange eye. I fired off a dozen or more shots. Then I lowered back down and headed back up the pathway to the vehicle. It was a nice way to end a day, that I did not want to end.
