Bird Pic Of The Week

Chestnut-sided Warbler

(Setophaga pensylvanica)

Where: Door County, WI • Chambers Island

Notes: Sometimes it’s about the journey, sometimes it is about the destination. This one hundred and three pound birdbath rock that this spring male Chestnut-sided Warbler is standing on, was transported from Virginia on an eleven-hundred mile journey to its final installation spot on an island near the mouth of Green Bay in Wisconsin. Within the first few days of the water dripping and flowing from this mini water feature, there were several visitors including: Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, American Goldfinches and even a female Baltimore Oriole. This little gem of a bird showed up on the second day after installation. My wife and I sat about fifteen feet away on a garden bench hoping for such a treat. We first saw the Warbler flitting around in the top of the closest tree, only twenty feet or so off the ground. It stair-stepped its way down the tree’s branches to explore the sound and movement of the water. In no time at all this colorful, Chickadee sized, insectivorous bird was splashing in the birdbath right in front of us. Suddenly I realized, it was well worth the journey.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. A total of EIGHTY species has been attracted at a single location in central Virginia!
