Bird Pic Of The Week

Cedar Waxwing

(Bombycilla cedrorum)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: Notes: I once read a book about nature photography, published around 1940, that was published on the behalf of Kodak just as color “Kodachrome” film made its debut into the public market place. Most of the book was completely irrelevant to today's practices, but I took from it the most basic fundamental preparation to so many of the photos I have had the pleasure of pushing the button for, and that is to "imagine the photo before you take it." When I first read those words, I thought it was as odd and outdated as much of the rest of that book. But more and more since then, I have actually found that statement to be a useful train of thought towards capturing a certain scene. Having heard the nomadic flock of Waxwings around the area for the last several days and the forecast for snow got me imagining. About three days before I captured this image, I specifically said to my wife, “I’d love to get a photo of a Cedar Waxwing at the birdbath in the snow.” But the Waxwings had only visited the birdbath twice before. So the day after the snowfall, I set up the camera for the first time in quite a while. The temperatures had struggled to make it out of the twenties over the last few days and activity was pretty high with a lot of the local birds coming in for a drink. There is a thermostatically controlled, submerged water-heater in the birdbath to keep it from freezing. So this was probably the only liquid water around the area. Later that afternoon, I just about jumped out of my seat when this Cedar Waxwing dropped in unannounced for quick drink. I fired as quickly and as many shots as the camera could write to the memory card, being sure to focus and refocus again. Then as this bird turned to fly back up to the trees, it struck this pose just before take off.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. A total of EIGHTY species has been attracted at a single location in central Virginia!
