Bird Pic Of The Week

American Robin

(Turdus migratorius)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: There is probably few other birds that are so commonly known as the American Robin. But certainly, Cardinals and Blue Jays are close runner-ups. It always makes me glad when a young child points at an image, smiles and knows it by name. That gesture reiterates the appreciation for nature that has always been within me, right from the very start. Over the last few weeks a small flock of a half dozen or so Robins, have been visiting the backyard birdbath. Quite often one bird enters the trickling water and a couple of other birds await their turn close by. The bird bath puddle is small, it only allows for one at a time bathing. The “King of the Bath” often has to fend its position, as it wards off other would be soakers. This it does with a snap of its beak, an open mouth, or a yelp or two, to demonstrate its dominance. These birds often gather in large flocks t roost at night, but disperse into smaller groups during the day as they search for worms and berries. The American robin is the state bird of three states: Connecticut, Michigan, and Wisconsin. It always a joy to have them around no matter how common they are.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. A total of EIGHTY species has been attracted at a single location in central Virginia!
