Bird Pic Of The Week

Great Blue Heron

(Ardea herodias)

Where: Hilton Head, SC • Sea Pines Beach

Notes: Notes: One of the things I love about wildlife photography, besides being outdoors and seeing all kinds of amazing things, is the challenge. Getting a pleasing silhouette of a moving target can present its own difficulties. First the weather has to cooperate and then there needs to be an interesting subject. I find manual exposure mode works best for this type of photography. But first I sample the available skylight just above the horizon in an automatic exposure mode, this reveals a good combination of settings to start with. Then by switching to manual mode I adjust the ISO, shutter speed and f-stop to match. Small changes will have to be made to increase the exposure as the light fades. This is done by starting with a larger than normal f-stop number and then slowly lowering it as the sun went down. This is done in combination with raising the ISO rating as needed. The shutter speed was already set to the low end of the desirable speed, so that stayed constant. The orange light along the horizon and deep blue skies above shimmered and danced on top of the rippling water. Then about seventy-five yards up the beach, this Great Blue Heron appeared along the to the shoreline and began to search for an evening meal. I turned away from the water and then trotted parallel in that direction, until the heron was aligned with the reflecting sunset. I was able to stand back pretty far since this species is about four feet tall, plus I wanted the extra scenery in the image. Then the “Great Blue” began to run around, chasing minnows at the edge of the surf. This image is the result of climate, subject and exposure combined. Another beautiful end to a wonderful day.
