Bird Pic Of The Week

Dark-eyed Junco

(Junco hyemalis)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This “snow bird” nestled within the fall scenery is a reminder, that as autumn passes into winter, another year quickly approaches. For me, this is a time for reflection. To rediscover and acknowledge the blessings that came throughout the past year, some obvious, while others hid within challenges at first. Looking back at the year’s photographs reminds me of the amazing people, places and creatures that our world is beautified with. Its been an adventuresome time. The year started with Snowy Owls on Ocracoke Island in North Carolina; followed by Limpkin, Rosate Spoonbill and Sandhill Crane chicks in early spring in Florida. Back in Virginia, spring migration brought three new birdbath species to the yard. In late spring we headed to Wisconsin to see Loons and breeding plumage shorebirds. There we got to experience spring for the third time in a single year. This was followed by a full schedule of fall art shows and program presentations. A final adventure to the beaches of South Carolina in early December, brought a relaxing pace back to life before the onset of the holidays and new year’s celebrations.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
