Bird Pic Of The Week

Northern Flicker

(Colaptes auratus)

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.

Notes: This is another shot taken during one of the recent winter snowfalls here in the Mid-Atlantic. This image was captured only a few minutes before the Cedar Waxwing (Pic Of The Week 01/27/14) I had been hoping for came into the birdbath. It was a real surprise when I looked up and saw this foot long woodpecker on the monitor. As the bird drank, it dipped its long beak down into the water and then drew its head upward to swallow. At that point I would trigger a few shots with the remote shutter release. Unknowingly, when this Flicker raised its head, its beak was extending out of the top of the image frame. Because I had set up the camera in hopes of photographing a Waxwing, which are only about seven inches long, the view was a bit too tight to fit this slightly larger bird. Fortunately, there was this one shot out of the group of ten, that had the entire bird in the frame. The birds profile position and a little additional depth of field, provided enough of a focal range for the subject to be sharp. The shutter speed was purposefully slowed to provide a little extra exposure. This adjustment provided the additional time needed to lighten the subject against the surrounding bright scenery, but not enough to overexpose the white snow. Without that adjustment the bird would appear dark and almost silhouetted. Northern Flickers are one of the few woodpecker species that migrate. They are present year-round in most of the continental United States. This is a male Flicker, differentiated from the female by the black teardrop shape at the base of its beak.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
