Great Blue Heron

Notes:In anticipation of warmer days to come, the Great Blue’s arrive at their rookeries early and choose a nesting location. Presenting their best plumage of the year and a well constructed nest, they hope to attract a mate. In this area, the courtship activity typically starts around the middle of February, but seems to be a bit behind so far this year. Perhaps the chill from the last polar vortex is slowing the return? Nature is amazing in how it adjusts to the world and weather. Before too long the nearly constant nest building and maintenance will begin along with celebrated courtship displays. Eggs will be laid and incubated. Then the Shad and Herring will run up the river and serve as food to feed the young. Spring awaits.
