PIC OF THE WEEK: 05/11/15 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2015 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.
Notes: This little gem was not a new species to the backyard birdbath, but was certainly a new “plumage version” none the less. A female Blackburnian had visited the little dripping water puddle last fall (SEE: PIC OF THE WEEK 09/22/14). Perhaps the most exciting time of year for me is when spring migration is at its peak. That season always seems to bring some new surprises and this year was no different. This breeding plumage male is in his best plumage of the year and is one of the most gorgeous of the Warbler family. I had seen this plumage before, in its natural habitat high atop Virginia’s Shenadoah mountains (SEE: PIC OF THE WEEK 06/10/13). So, to have it in my backyard for a three day stopover was a real treat. Most of our migratory birds travel at night, then they stop briefly along their way, to refuel for a couple of days before continuing on. I believe that was the case for this bird.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
