PIC OF THE WEEK: 06/08/15 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2015 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.
Notes: The Brown Thrasher remains one of my all-time favorite yardbirds. Its lush rusty back and white breast, speckled with black, give it a distinct appearance. This earth-tone color scheme keeps it well concealed as it “thrashes” amongst the fallen leaves on the ground in search of bugs. This bird is in the same family of birds that includes Northern Mockingbird and Gray Catbird. All three are similar in size, about ten to twelve inches, and have similar mimic based songs as well. The Brown Thrasher is noted for having over one thousand song types and the largest repertoire of all birds. Theses three species calls can be distinguished from one another by counting the repeating song sections. Catbirds have nearly no repetition at all, Thrashers two to three repeats consistently and Mockingbirds have more than three repeated song segments. Mockingbirds also sing at night. Knowing these characteristics can save a lot of searching in the hedge rows and thickets for the originator.
