PIC OF THE WEEK: 07/06/15 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2015 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Warrington, VA • Environmental Learning Studies on the Piedmont
Notes: One of the joys of the summer season is the presence of these tiny birds. Their return to our locality is an event in itself. There is even a website dedicated to their arrival (MIGRATION MAP). Portions of the population somehow manage to cross the Gulf of Mexico, twice a year during migration. That is five hundred miles of non-stop flight, taking about twenty hours to accomplish, one way. Then, consider how Hummingbirds manage to find enough nutritional resources to fuel their fast hovering flight, with up to eighty strokes per second. These amazing little three inch long birds typically weigh only about three grams. As in all known hummingbird species, the female builds a nest using fine grasses, hair, spider web silk and lichen (SEE: PIC OF THE WEEK 08/11/14). The nest is well camouflaged and so small, that you could just barely squeeze a golfball into it. Typically the females lay two eggs that are about the size of a small bean. She raises the chicks entirely by herself over about a three week period, then the chicks are old enough to fledge. Soon it will be their turn to make that amazing flight.
