PIC OF THE WEEK: 09/07/15 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2015 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: The completion of a new speaker program entitled “Our Wonderful Wood Warblers” and the opportunity to share it at an EVENT this fall inspired this week’s posting of this migratory beauty. The Blackpoll warbler is notorious amongst birdwatchers for its tendency to stay high in the highest tree tops as they follow its “squeaky-brake” sounding call. This often provides would-be observers with a crick in the neck or “warbler-neck” as it is lovingly called by birders. To see and photograph this high altitude species at nearly ground level was a real treat. Its jet black cap, streaky sides, double wing bars, and orange legs give it a distinct look. The Blackpoll is one of the most common warblers in the northern Boreal Forest of Canada, where they breed. Then they fly all the way to South America each winter and back the following spring. An amazing feat for a little five inch long songbird.
