PIC OF THE WEEK: 09/28/15 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2015 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: The occasional visit by a variant migrant, like this female Scarlet Tanager, makes me aware that there are many, many more birds flying south this time of year, than are observed. But occasionally there is a sampling of that vast movement. Small groups of migratory birds move about in the undergrowth, searching for insects and fruit to replenish their little bodies for the great task of travel ahead of them. Migration is a flee from harsh weather that gives each species the best chance to survive. It’s move or face the winter. This Tanager species breeds primarily in the northeast quarter of the United States, including Virginia. Then, flies all the way to northwestern South America each winter. The brilliant red and black males (SEE: PIC OF THE WEEK 07/21/08) and amongst our most beautiful birds, especially when they are in their breeding plumage upon the return trip north.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. A total of EIGHTY species has been attracted at a single location in central Virginia!
