PIC OF THE WEEK: 11/23/15 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2015 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA • Dirk Rd.
Notes: When an image tells the story of the bird’s behavior, especially its uniqueness amongst the rest of the animal world, then it does something special. It doesn’t just capture its beauty and educate, but it reveals its essence. Like the Kingfisher with a minnow in its mouth, the Osprey snatching a fish off the water’s surface, or a Robin tugging on a worm as it clings to the ground; this Waxwing photograph fits right in with that notion. This species eats berries and sugary fruit year-round, including: dogwood, serviceberry, cedar, juniper, hawthorn, and winterberry. During the breeding season in late summer, it also adds insects to its diet. Keeping a watchful eye on local shrubs and fruit bearing trees can be helpful in finding these airbrushed looking birds in their nomadic flocks, especially in fall and winter.
