PIC OF THE WEEK: 03/14/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.
Notes: Considering the striking beauty of the Blackburnian (SEE: PIC OF WEEK 6-10-13) or the Chestnut-sided (SEE: PIC OF WEEK 9-8-14) , the Orange-crowned is perhaps the most drab of the Warbler family. Especially in a group of birds that is known for their brilliance and colorful plumage. Warblers are some of the most sought after views in the bird watching world. Birders will travel great distances and stretch the limits of their binoculars, and neck, to catch a glimpse of these little gems as they sing from the tippy-top of the tallest trees each spring. This species is typically only a migratory bird here in the mid-Atlantic. Yet over the past few months, this little olive-gray bird has sprinkled our winter with some occasional excitement. Its intermittent visits to the “Bird Spa” has made this sweet little bird a more familiar Warbler. Its high-pitched chattery call and chip note has become a memorable sound, often calling before it shows up at the bath for a quick dip. I will miss this plane little visitor after it heads off, probably to Canada, for the breeding season.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
