PIC OF THE WEEK: 03/21/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: Throughout my life I have witnessed the changes in bird species as their relate to the changing surroundings. Scrubby fields giving way to young sapling trees. Where Field Sparrows, American Kestrels and Meadowlarks are replaced with Indigo Buntings, Common Yellowthroats and Prairie Warblers. Eventually that habitat matures into shaded understory. Where they are replaced with Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanagers, Red-eyed Vireos and others. Even in a suburban environment, highly controlled plantings mature and the inhabitants change accordingly. In our own backyard habitat, many of the gardens have grown and prospered over the last few years. This has brought with it some species diversity. The Mockingbird is one of the newest additions. Probably due to the maturing fruit bearing bushes and trees planted a few years ago. This member of the mimic family, along with the Brown Thrasher and Gray Catbird, eat insects but also like fruit. Especially varieties that mature in the fall and winter that the Mockingbird will protect with great vigor from flocks of Cedar Waxwings, American Robins, European Starlings, and even the occasional Eastern Bluebird. But Mockingbirds are perhaps best known for their melodious repetition of other birds calls and songs. Its song can continue for long periods, seemingly endless, even throughout the warm summer nights.
