PIC OF THE WEEK: 05/30/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Stanley, VA • Skyline Dr. • Shenandoah National Park
Notes: A brief visit to the upper elevations of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Bedford County last week, brought a bit of sorrow and reminiscence of days long gone by. What a better remedy for aches of the past, than the present. A quick gathering of sleeping bag, food, drink, and camera gear, loaded for the Skyline Drive. After all, the forecast looked sunny for the next two days. Seems like it rained every day for the entire month of May this year. Plus the thrust of spring migration was dwindling fast. Ascending up to elevations over four thousand feet, brought to memory a familiar assortment of songs and sounds: Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Chestnut-sided Warblers, Cerulean Warblers, Veery and the occasional Raven squawking. The next morning, after visiting the field at Big Meadows at sunrise, I decided to work back along the roadside. Looking for places were steep edges face Northward. This positioned me well up into the canopy of the downhill trees, where Warbles typically feed and sing. It put the sun to my back as well. Then the distinct staccato song of the Canada Warbler pierced the morning chorus. I had just heard it just last week. The Warbler seemed to prefer calling from a localized section along the road, where a creek trickled down the nearly vertical bank. So I waited there along the short stone wall that guarded the road’s edge. Three different times the same bird foraged there, just below eye level in the understory trees. Occasionally it would stop and sing once or twice from an open perch. This revealed the necklace-like markings on its brilliant yellow belly. This was a real treat for a species that I have only seen a handful of times in decades of birdwatching. This will make a nice addition to the “Wonderful Wood Warblers” Program and perhaps be a finalist for the 2017 Calendar?
