PIC OF THE WEEK: 06/27/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: Since the passing migration and the arrival of juvenile birds a few times a day, it was a “great” surprise to see this handsome bird show up for a dip in the cool trickling water. Their prominent rounded crest, buttery-colored belly and mixture of rust-lined feathers give them a particularly pleasing look. Visits of this species to the birdbath have been few and far between. The first ever “Great-crested” in The Birs Spa here was after five years on June 9, 2014, just a couple of years ago (SEE: PIC OF THE WEEK 06-09-14). The next visit was almost a year later, on June 16, 2015 (SEE: PIC OF THE WEEK 07-27-15, and this year, also in the month of June. All visits were in the morning between the hours of 7:47 AM and 10:46 AM. This time it showed up on a second consecutive day. These amazing birds fly south each winter, with a majority of them migrating all the way to South America and back. They nest in tree cavities, typically in deciduous forests, but seem to be adapting to urban areas with deciduous trees as well. They breed in the eastern half of the U.S., primarily form Florida to the Canadian border. They are a little over seven inches long and have about a thirteen inch wing span. They fly out to catch insects in flight, like other members of the Flycatcher family, but they also eat fruits and berries. Their “wheerreeeep” like vocalizations announce the coming of warmer weather as their call carries through the canopy of our neighborhood trees each spring.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
