PIC OF THE WEEK: 07/25/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: In the heat of the summer, what a better way to keep cool, than a dip in some cool water. This male Northern Cardinal is clearly taking advantage of the flowing and filtered water in The Bird Spa. Regulating body temperature is just one of the uses that birds have for water. This also becomes a means to condition their feathers and to rinse off any possible parasites such as lice or ticks. Now that it is late summer, many species are starting to molt. This process can change as little as a few wing feathers in older birds, to an entire body feather replacement. Especially for juvenile birds, now in their first year of life. Nearly all of those youngsters will go through a complete molt, and most will obtain a completely different appearance as well. Some adult birds will also change in appearance for the fall and winter months, until next spring when their breeding plumage reappears.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
