PIC OF THE WEEK: 09/05/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA • Glidewell Rd.
Notes: This medium-sized member of the woodpecker family, about a foot in length, is a hodgepodge of colors and patterns. It has an overall khaki-brown base color with barred-stripes on its back and spots on its belly. At the top of the Flicker’s breast, is a horizontally positioned, black crescent moon shape. Its face and neck are a peachy-brown and only the male has the tear-shaped mark extending from the corner of its mouth. Its head is light neutral gray on top, extending from its forehead to the back of its neck, where it is adorned with a bright red collar mark. It has a white rump-patch that is easily visible when it flies, which makes a really good field identification mark. Its tail and wing primary feathers have yellow shafts in its eastern range and are red-shafted in the west. They are now considered to be two different color morphs of a single species. These color variations are easily viewed when in flight. Their call is an short, evenly toned repeated note, with equal rhythm. It changes only in volume as it raises in and fades out each series. The vocalization is very similar to that of the Pileated Woodpecker in tone and volume, but the Pileated is uneven in its rhythm. It is always a treat to see these unusual looking birds at “The Bird Spa” when they come by occasionally for a drink or a bath.

THE BIRD SPA

The Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Over seventy-five plus species attracted at a single location in central Virginia.
