PIC OF THE WEEK: 10/24/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: At nearly ground level, the hight of The Bird Spa is just the right altitude for this ground dwelling bird. Not only does the Towhee most often feed near the ground, but it also nests near, or directly on the ground as well. This species is actually considered a large sparrow, even though it is much larger than most. Other sparrows measure about 4 to 6 inches in length, but the Towhee is an astonishing 7 to 9 inches. The distinctive male has a jet black head and back, rufous ribs and white belly. The female is similar, but a dark brown replaces the black areas of the male. When in flight, white outer tail feathers are also revealed. Their “cha-wink” call is very distinguishable from the other sounds emanating from the brushy habitat it prefers. About once or twice a year on average, our backyard is graced with the presence of this striking bird. Most such visits have occurred in the fall, but once or twice we have had a mid-winter and spring visitor too. It is always a joy to see this striking bird at the birdbath or just kicking up the leaves in search of insects and such.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
