PIC OF THE WEEK: 12/26/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKNEXT WEEKALL 2016 PICS

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: The scarlet-red head-patch that gives the Ruby-crowned Kinglet its name is not often seen. It occurs only in the male’s plumage and it is typically kept hidden. This tiny little bird, smaller than a Chickadee, can open and close this colorful feature at will. But I have witnessed its exposure many times, because this species tends to become excited as it approaches the water of The Bird Spa. Hoping around with its wings twittering, it cautiously approaches the birdbath. When excited like this, it frequently opens the crease revealing this glorious secret coloration. Kinglets are a wintertime bird for us, here in the mid-Atlantic, but The Bird Spa’s built in de-icer keeps the water flowing even at sub-freezing temperatures. Who would expect such hidden beauty, from such a charming little bird.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
