PIC OF THE WEEK: 02/15/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: Everything seems to just fall into perfect alignment from time to time. The morning sun filtered through distant leafless trees, clear blue skies brought about by frigid temperatures and this lovely male Bluebird in just the right spot the edge of the water. Those moments bring a rise of gratitude for the simple pleasures in life. Over the last couple of subfreezing days a procession of birds had been showing up at the “Bird Spa,” probably because all other local water sources were frozen stiff. Many of our common resident birds and wintering species, along with a couple of surprises, had been at the birdbath including: Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Brown Thrasher, Northern Mockingbird, Tufted Titmouse, Common Grackle, Brown-headed Blackbird, Carolina Chickadee, Blue Jay, Northern Cardinal, White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Morning Dove, American Goldfinch, House Finch and uncommonly a Chipping Sparrow. In a world of ever increasing complexity, it is a true gift be able to find a moment of peace to enjoy the simple beauty around us.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
