PIC OF THE WEEK: 02/22/16 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2016 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: The “Bird Spa” continues to provide the essential survival ingredient of water to my backyard landscape, even at sub-freezing temperatures. This is made possible by a submersible deicer, a device typically used by farmers in their cattle troughs to keep them thawed during the coldest winter months. Thermostatically controlled, it runs only when appropriate, supplying just enough heat to keep the water from solidifying. When the weather conditions are that frigid, the local birds seem to appreciate The Bird Spa all the more. I believe this to be true, because nearly all other neighborhood water sources are frozen solid or buried in snow. The procession of birds in and out of the bath is astonishing, just in numbers alone. Then considering the increased species diversity that visit, I know is truly helping our local bird population during such difficult conditions.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
