PIC OF THE WEEK: 03/20/17 • PREVIOUS WEEKALL 2017 PICSNEXT WEEK

Where: Richmond, VA
Notes: There has been a fairly regular visit from the local Bluebird pair to the Bird Spa lately. Most often their arrival has coincided with the morning light as it glistens on the flowing water. That soft golden sunlight only occurs for about thirty minutes each morning. Their cheerful presence has been a hopeful reminder of years past, when they have bred on my suburban property. Though they skipped last year, for the first time in six years, I pray their presence is a sign that they have chosen this place to breed and raise their chicks again. They have also been defending the box in the backyard for the last several weeks as well. When the invasive House Sparrows came around, they ran them off. Either way it has been exciting to have them drop down to the birdbath for a drink so frequently. Their visits have also bee a reminder that it has been two years since the last Virginia Bluebird Society Annual Meeting. The good news is, that it means this fall there will be another, since they meet bi-annually, most likely November 18th, 2017 (SEE: SCHEDULE). My ties to Bluebird box building and maintenance experiences, dates back to my adolescence. A friend’s summer retreat even had one with my name written across the from of it. It was their way of identifying and describing what box had what in it. Like: “Bob’s box has Chickadees in it,” or “John’s box has three baby Bluebirds about to fledge.” My box had a prime location in the old orchard and had these beauties nesting in it most years. In addition, my old hometown birding group, The Lynchburg Bird Club, had a Bluebird as their logo. Reminders of past joys as spring begins, so comes new hope with the presence of these little blue gems.

THE BIRD SPA

The Simple Birdbath Alternative • DIY Installation Instructions and Parts List

Birds, like all other animals, prefer habitats that meet all their basic survival needs: food, shelter and WATER! They depend on water to condition their feathers for flight, to help maintain their body temperature, for hydration, and for hygiene. A landscape with a consistent, clean running water source will attract both a greater number of species and a higher count of birds. This especially applies to the many migratory and insect-eating species too. The Bird Spa is a low maintenance water feature, designed specifically for birds. Has ATTRACTED 80 DIFFERENT SPECIES at a single location in central Virginia!
